Religion - Definition and Approaches, part 1

This is the first of two introductory lessons that seeks to define what religion is and how we should approach it.

  1. I think watching this should be a requirement because I feel like a lot of people do not understand different religions other than their own. Some have a tendency to judge and criticize people for what they believe in without understanding the belief. Micheal McGowan does a good job making the terms easy to understand which can allow people to be more comfortable in watching the video.

  2. I agree with McGowan that it's very important to know about different religions because it helps us understand major world events and also to think for ourselves so that others who are religiously literate cannot attempt to manipulate us.

    The evolutionary approach appeals to me the most. We can see a trend in how religions started in primal societies and what it is now. The change from fetishism and animism to monotheism shows how the number of gods got reduced over time. I always believed that either there will be no more religion in future or eventually the world will agree to believe in the same god.

    An interesting term I learned in this video is "Henotheism" which recognizes many gods but worships only one.
