Cults: Children Of God: Lost & Found (part 1/7)

by Noah Thompson

Warning, there are some sexually explicit scenes in here. This is another example of a 1970s/80s cult in addition to the Jim Jones "Suicide Cult."

Published on Jul 10, 2009
After a highly unconventional childhood in Children of God, a cult that mixed religion with sex, filmmaker Noah Thomson escaped to begin a normal life. But after experiencing years of sexual abuse and neglect, Thomson and other former members of the organization may never know what "normal" is. The documentary follows Thomson as he searches for others who have tried to start a new life outside the cult - and searches for answers about his own lost childhood.

  1. This was a very interesting video. It was quiet awkward watching how brainwashed kids and adults were in this cult, to the point where adults molested young children as a common practice.

  2. I agree with Jose. It was definitely something else! A little weird but very interesting to see what goes on that we don't know about. Absolutely a video to see if you have never seen or heard of such a thing before.

  3. I find it very disturbing to see a "religious group" take part in such an inhumane act. I see absolutely no religious affiliation when it comes to sexually enticing and abusing children. I am in shock of the practices that are being performed by these cults and how these followers are so immensely brainwashed by their leaders.

  4. It was interesting to see this cult's depiction of how faith, and ultimately fear, can be used to manipulate the masses. This manipulation was apparent when they showed the kids' living conditions and "schooling". It is shocking to see all the abuse that these people did in the name of their cult. Yet, religion has been used as a catalyst before, good and bad.

  5. I remember watching this in class and cringing a little inside. It’s unbelievable that people would do things like this and think that it’s what God would want them to do. All the practices that this cult partook in contradicted with God ways. God would never want children to be sexually molested under his name. I really feel bad for all the children that had to endure such trauma. This is truly heartbreaking.

  6. Through out this video I wonder how did these people really continue going on with these disturbing acts. I honestly feel bad for all those children that were scared for life and had to live on with such a horrible life experience,

  7. Beliefs are beliefs. You cannot blame a person for believing that sex is a tantric experience that will bring you closer to God. You cannot blame a person for wanting their children to participate in that. What is inherently wrong is indoctrinating the children and forcing them to do these things. They were so young and still too immature to actually realize what was happening. Mormons practiced polygamy. Every religion has done something weird or radical in their history. Christians burned a man for saying the sun did not revolve around the Earth. While the Children of God is clearly a cult and were under a spell of evil and lust, it is sad that they fell to a trap of a person that I'm not even sure had the right intentions.

  8. this is just terrible, there is no way that is something a religious group should be doing. This is just a bunch of people taking advantage of innocent children. This is not what religion is about.

  9. Seeing videos like this and realizing that such things are happening around us is just crazy. It is hard to believe that a supposedly religious organization and its members are abusing children. The strangest thing is that these people are sure that they promote a word of God, and they don't find the things they do to be wrong.

  10. This is a very alerting warning to what our world is coming to. Abuse to promote God? Seems like its getting worst by the day.

  11. I was taken away when we saw this video in class. I never believed someone could be so cruel and ignorant. This cult and what happened took away the innocence of many people. As a believer of God, how do you begin to reverse this or fix it?

  12. The ideals of this cult are very shocking. Especially being children of such a young age, you don't understand right from wrong and these parents are abusing them psychologically and physically. This is just sad.

  13. When I had watched this in class I was very uncomfortable. With that being said, it provided vivid detail and insight into the cult way of life. Its amazing how much "charisma" their leader was able to have among them, and how much power he had. It is very unfortunate that these people see that this is the way to live life, God help us all.

  14. I'm going to watch the full documentary. This clip is very disturbing. I am not sure if I will ever understand whether or not the people of this cult can purely feel that what they're involved in is validated in any way, shape, or form. My heart sinks because innocent children should not be forced to believe that this is a right way life, and what God "wants" them to do.

  15. This video scared me a bit, but was very informing. It is crazy to think that young kids are taught the way and just go with it. Cults are so scary, and disturbing. It weird to see that people are capable of thinking like that, and it is very unfortunate. I almost feel that they choose this path because they just possibly don't know any better.
