Questions for discussion: How does this video illustrate the concepts from the chapter on religious communities? Charismatic leaders? Founded religions? Why do you think people would be attracted to join a suicide cult?

  1. I heard stories about what happened with this cult and to learn in detail what actually happened amazes me. Its crazy how far people go to follow their beliefs.

  2. This video is a very detailed account on what had happened with the cult led by Jim Jones. I do not understand how people would be willing to participate in an environment induced by paranoia and fear. When it comes to such a delicate subject such as religion, people are easily manipulated and brainwashed to believe anything the leader says. I find it even more disturbing to see innocent children be a part of this cult that would ultimately lead to a mass suicide.

  3. The video depicts a suicide cult led by Jim Jones that killed almost 1000 people. Probably the most important aspect that drove his followers to him was his charismatic, confident (yet secretly manipulative) attitude and mystical promises in the face of social injustice. Such disparity within the community makes mass brainwashing possible, like we saw happened during the holocaust. Once these people were in the commune and saw the destructive truth behind the cult, they were not allowed to leave and too afraid to try.

  4. This video was too crazy. Like Jose said, people just go too far with their beliefs. This for sure was a great example of that. Unfortunately, there are people like that, and they go and hurt other people. Innocent children get put into danger. This video can also be used to educate others and make them aware of what else goes on in the world and how religion really does influence society.

  6. I find it unbelievable that so many people followed Jim Jones’s beliefs even though they were so negative. I guess it’s because Jim Jones was such a charismatic leader. Watching this made me very sad, I can’t imagine anyone going through that. One thing that really bothered me was when that man left his son behind. He knew what was going on in Jonestown so I don’t understand why he would leave his son behind. The children should have been the first people to be taken out of that place. This just shows you how brainwashed the people were.

  7. This is sickening! I can't believe thee people actually followed Jim Jones. this is is so morally incorrect and i'm sorry but that man should have just killed himself and let everyone go. The people were actually so ignorant that they drank the "Koo-laid" and killed themselves. The expression" drinking the Koolaid" came from this.

  8. The guy who we had that conversation with about philosophy talked with me about this. It is unbelievable that a PhD recipient was able to fall for this. It is interesting because anybody could have fallen for this. As an agnostic atheist I wonder why people follow a certain religion with so much uncertainty in the world. Believing in a reborn Jesus Christ is something that I still have questions about, but honestly cults like these make claims that are not even well founded. While Jesus was part of history and the Bible teaches great lessons, this cult provided no good service to society. It would be a great PhD dissertation for a sociology student to write about the mindset of these followers.

  11. The story about the mass murder in Jonestown is really sad, disturbing, and makes you wonder how a person like Jim Jones would have so many followers who were willing to go to a remote area in South America in order to enjoy a "perfect" life. I saw another documentary about Jonestown, and both times it was really hard watching kids and adults letting themselves to be killed by Jim Jones and his people. This is a terrible and horrifying event that I hope is never going to happen again in the future.

  13. This video was interesting to watch. It makes me realize that people are very ignorant and selfish. Charismatic leaders like this who hold so much power over the people who follow him take advantage of this and use people as their puppets. Not only do I blame charismatic leaders but their followers as well. People should not fall into open trap and be so naive. It's awful to see how far people go for their beliefs.

  14. Very unfortunate and sad to see people so lost and hopeless that they saw that Jim Jones and his way was the answer. This just shows how charismatic Jim Jones was! The thought of this event and how this was possible disturbs me.
