“Gabriel’s Oboe” and music as a channel of the numinous

Can music be a gateway or a portal to the Sacred?

For the full text of the post on why this music is so important to me on a personal level, go to my blog FAITH, HOPE, LOVE (and REASON).

Below is the full rendition of Gabriel's Oboe, which was composed for the film The Mission.

Ennio Morricone - The Mission Main Theme (Morricone Conducts Morricone)

A few years ago Sarah Brightman received Enno Morricone's permission to write lyrics to go with Gabriel's Oboe in Italian titled "Nella Fanstasia"

  1. This melody is very soothing. I really liked it. In the movie, it was played at the times when spiritual love was being shown. This connection brings it more closer to the heart. Professor, I read how this melody relates to your wife's death. I was sad to read about your wife's death. Although I already knew about it, but reading about it made me more emotional. It is true that some things (music, art) have a unique connection with our feelings.

  2. It is a beautiful song that was nicely incorporated into the film but being able to read and see the words behind it shows how nice of a story "The Mission" wanted to portray.

  3. The song is very nice, peaceful. Music is definitely a channel to the numinous because it can put you in a different state of mind. Also can create a state of ecstasy or detatchment from your surroundings.

  11. Great post, Professor! This rendition of Gabriel's Oboe is absolutely beautiful and so soothing to listen to, and the lyrics are very uplifting and positive. I felt relaxed and at peace listening to this. Musical pieces like this one that can touch the soul without any lyrics is something otherwordly, but the addition of Sarah Brightman's breathtaking lyrics really makes me feel connected to this song on a spiritual level.

  12. This song is very soothing and the lyrics are very touching. My favorite line would have to be "In my fantasy exists a warm wind That breathes into the city, like a friend."

  13. Awesome post professor! I will definitely be downloading this song into my playlist. This song is very touching, and the lyrics portray the act of sacrificial love, and the soothing effect it has on a person. This song coincided perfectly with the final battle scene in the Mission, when Rodrigo is laying down on the floor and looking up to see what will happen to his friend father Gabriel.

  14. I do not believe that music can be a portal to the sacred, but I do believe that music is very powerful. I feel like music is able to change the emotions that a person is feeling depending on the type of music that it is and the different pitches of the music. This song was very soothing though.

  15. To respond to the question to be discussed, I personally do believe that music can be a getaway or portal to the sacred. I can tell this from personal experience. I may not have many memories of things like this, but when I lived in Venezuela I studied in a Catholic school for 10 years, and I recall from my Communion and my Confirmation that we were always taught songs to sing in the ceremonies, and whenever I sang them at the church or my school chapel, it made me feel relieved and good.

  17. The theme song to "The Mission" suited it perfectly. This song gave the audience a sense of peace throughout most parts of the movie when it was being played. I like how the song has many points of serenity and excitement that match the major parts of the movie.

  18. I have a friend that says that she truly feels like when she is worshiping sometimes she escapes from her physical body and she is experiencing something supernatural. I do believe music can be a gateway to the numinous because it is a way to offer our hearts to God and encounter Him in a special way.
