Iran's Revolutions

Iran's Revolutions: Crash Course World History 226

Published on Feb 26, 2015
In which John Green teaches you about Iran's Revolutions. Yes, revolutions plural. What was the1979 Iranian Revolution about? It turns out, Iran has a pretty long history of unrest in order to put power in the hands of the people, and the most recent revolution in 1979 was, at least at first, not necessarily about creating an Islamic state. It certainly turned out to be about that, but it was initially just about people who wanted to get rid of an oppressive regime. Listen up as John teaches you about Iran's long history of revolution.

  1. The Iran we see today was just one of the many past the nation could have went on. In an alternate timeline, Iran could have been much different. Yet, this depends on just which events would have been changed. In order for us to understand how things would have been different, we need to examine the recent history of Iran. It is important to mention that both the 1953 Coup (which was backed by the U.S and the UK against the democratic iranian government) and the Islamic Revolution of 1979, changed Iran drastically. Not to mention of the religious leader, Ayatollah Khomeini, who ruled the nation as an anti-western Islamic Theocracy.

  2. Iran has had the unfortunate happen as the territory is one which many desire for a variety of reasons. I feel that, oddly enough, I never really learned about Islamic history in any sense up until now. Which, I believe should change considering we learn of all other governments such as those located in Europe or South America but yet I cannot recall dwelling on Iran's history at any point in time. They clearly have had a tug of war on the land between radical dictatorship and those who wish for a more..democratic political practice. History repeats itself and in order to stop it from doing so and create new paths one must thoroughly study that history and where it continues to go wrong.

  3. Many people think that the Iranian revolution of 1979 was because of the religious differences that exist in this country.
The largest muslim community is called "Sunni", while in this country the majority is "Shia". The truth is that the revolution occurred not because of the religious differences, nut because the oppression that the superiors had to the people.
The Iranians wanted to get rid of the dynasty that had only had two kings and that is why people started to raise movements in which they could finally get rid of the president.

  4. This video was very interesting because it reminded me of a movie I had seen where Americans were held hostage in the Embassy in Iran. The movie was the first time I had an in-depth look at Iranian culture, government, economics, and politics. This video helped me further understand the Iranian Revolution which is something that was not a clear topic for me.

  7. Watching this video was very informative on the morals, traditons, and rules of Iranians. Honestly, I would have never thought that Iranian individuals went through the things that they did for their country and still continue to suffer today. As speaking for myself, many Americans take for granted the simplicity and freedom that we have in our country and we often do not think about how other countries may be affected. Watching this video was a helpful reminder that outside of our "own little worlds" still remains major issues, cultural differences, and misunderstanding that has to be solved.

  9. Wow, it's unbelievable that the estate supported terrorism and I also find interesting that God is mentioned in the Constitution.

  11. I really liked this video , as all Crash Course videos are engaging and do a great job and informing their audience at what their topic is. I also am very terrible at history and this video helps me learn.

  12. This video was very helpful in explaining the Ayatollah Khomeinei's rise to power. I believe that the U.S. was wrong in involving itself in Iran in 1953, supporting a regime promoting secularism and modernity, which was clearly not wanted at the time.

For anyone interested: Al-Jazeera has a really good video explaining the structure of the Iranian political system in just under one minute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ea6w19XTNo

Foreign Affairs also speaks about the implications of a new Supreme Leader if Khamenei (current Supreme Leader) were to die
