  1. Fundamentalism is a 20th century phenomenon. At the time of World War One, there were big concerns not only about the German troops, but about major advances in science. The Bible, as the literal word of God was being put to the test by new theories about the origin of the holy book and the origin of the world itself. Darwin’s theory that man evolved over millions of years was considered as an attack of the integrity of the Bible. There was also a profound worry that Darwinism had resulted in the German atrocities. Part of the war propaganda was to present the Germans as monsters, killing babies and doing all kinds of appalling things. So Darwinism became a symbol of everything that was evil and murderous. By the 1960’s however, many felt they were embroiled in a war with a secular world that wanted to eliminate God, and their way of life. Every fundamentalist movement is rooted in a deep fear and a profound terror of annihilation. In other words, there is a tribal consciousness that try to protect their truth from contamination. They become defensive about it to keep falsehood out, so they can preserve something very powerful within.
