The study of religion offers a combination of analytical skills, observations, critical thinking, communication skills and cultural understanding. Religion has always been with us. Everywhere we turn, even if we go back to the dawn of civilization and human consciousness, we would find religion.
With the course about to end, I know have a better insight of this presentation. I did learn so much in this class. I feel like I was a bit oblivious about other religions. I never really opened my mind to them until this class. And you love what you teach, which makes it all the better for us! Great course and even better professor! I would recommend you to anyone!
As I'm writing the comments at the end of the semester I definitely left with a different view of religion. I've been open minded about religion before, but I've always seen religion as a thing of the past. It was necessary in the past but not necessary now. I had a very marxist view of religion actually. But this class has made me realize that there is space for religion in a modern society. It can function, and new religion can actually be helpful to many people. It was a really good learning experience, and help redefine religion for me.
I'm really glad that this class helped me learn a lot about the religion, faith, and God. Also, an important part of this class was the diverse approach to learning about each of the aspects of religion. Professor Holbrook and the book would always provide us with the different approaches of all main religions to a certain topic. I think that all FIU students should take this class, since we are an international university, and this class really helps everyone learn about people around and their believes.
I believe it is important to study religion because it impacts us as humans and our society so much. Although times have changed, a majority of societies were governed by their religion. Not only that but it's crazy to see realize that religion has been present in every era. People need something to believe in to go on and religion acts as the solution. Understanding every religious perspective allows you to grow as a person and create your own hybrid state of mind.
Studying religion can help one grow as a person. It can expand his or her views and understanding of the religion world. Also, it can help those form, back up, and/or change their own opinions and beliefs. This is a very good presentation! It explains not only what can come from studying religion but why we study it.
