White Christians no longer a majority

Pew: White Christians no longer a majority

Updated

White Christians now make up less than half of the U.S. population, largely receding from the majorities of most demographic groups, with one notable exception: the Republican Party.

According to the latest results from Pew Research Center's Religious Landscape survey published Monday by National Journal's Next America project, just 46 percent of American adults are white Christians, down from 55 percent in 2007.

At the same time, according to the report, the share of white Christians identifying as Republican has remained steady, even equal with the share of the party that carried President Ronald Reagan to his 1984 reelection. Nearly seven in 10 white Christians — 69 percent — identify with or lean toward the GOP, while just 31 percent do the same with Democrats.
Among nonwhite Christians, meanwhile, 32 percent identify with or lean toward Democrats, and just 13 percent do the same with Republicans.
In less than a decade, the gap in Christian identification between Democrats and Republicans has increased by 50 percent. According to the data presented, in 2007, 88 percent of white Republicans and 70 percent of white Democrats identified as Christian, an 18-point disparity. By 2014, 84 percent of white Republicans identified as Christian, but the share of white Democrats identifying as Christian fell by 13 points, to 57 percent, a 27-point gap.
Pew conducted the massive survey by telephone between June 4 and Sept. 30, 2014, interviewing 35,071 Americans, with an overall margin of error of plus or minus 0.6 percentage points.

  1. I think this is mainly due to the immigration of many latin american people, where most of them are christians.

  2. I agree with Victor, this is happening because there has been a lot of immigration from Latin Americans that are Christian. Me and my Family are an example of this. However, I think the most important thing should not be which ethnic group has the highest percentage, but to expand Christianity among all ethnicity.

  9. As said above, it has to do with immigration. Good to see some diversity coming about.

  10. Seeing as most immigrants are no longer a minority in the United States, it makes sense that Christianity is no longer just portrayed through a white community. But what to me is interesting about this article is the tie of religion to politics, and how it has increased in the Republican sector. As a Christian, it seems quite terrifying that a political party is holding the anchor or the face of Christianity when its doctrine is radical, non-inclusive, and has fascist like tendencies. Even more so, the fact that some, if not most, white christians in the republican party harbor negative or vindictive feelings towards immigrants regardless of them being christians or not.

  11. Well, the United States is known as the melting pot, so immigration would naturally occur because of this fact and for other reasons.

  12. Interesting article! The diversity of cultures in one place could bring positive and negative things, especially when religion is a strong part of the culture. The huge influence of Christianity in the US is because the great amount of Latin american people.

  16. that isn't so much of a shocker. since republicans are conservative when it comes to the idea of morals and so is religion in comparison to those who are non religious. Plus apparently our generation is growing in athiesm or at least being less religious than the past generations which also causes the growing gap. Last i heard there was an article mentioning that a large portion of america that titles themselves christian arent religious causing some to make the claim then, that they truly aren't christian which i disagree. to me you don't have to be religious in order to title yourself of that faith.

  17. As the time progresses, people change their views and beliefs and other religions are becoming more popular.
