5 Worst Cults to Ever Exist

A cult is defined as a group of people with religious beliefs and practices deemed as sinister or strange.
Whenever we hear about them, we automatically think they are evil, their members nothing more than gullible people. Regardless of what we feel, their existence is a reality.
The following 5 cults made headlines not just because of their strange beliefs but because they shocked and caused grief and death to thousands of people. These are five of the worst cults to ever exist.

5. Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God

4. Grail Movement Cult
Originally started in the late 40s, the Grail Movement was established by the followers of Oskar Ernst Bernhardt, also known as Abd-ru-shin. Their core belief follows the principles of his book "In the Light: The Grail Message", and currently, there are over 10,000 members.

3. Children of God

2. Heavens Gate
IN 1997 acting on an anonymous tip, police entered a hilltop mansion in California and found 39 dead people inside. This was the case that shaped people's notion of modern day doomsday cults – The Heaven's Gate.

1. Jonestown/ The Peoples Temple
It was a promised Utopia for members of The People's Temple of the Disciples of Christ or commonly, the People's Temple. But instead, their commune in Jonestown became a living hell for its many members and would leave the world shocked.

  1. Incredibly shocking and intriguing. I'd like to know more about the The Grail Movement Cult and why exactly it is they practiced cannibalism. It's honestly just questionable why individuals choose to partake in these practices/cults. However, it is also understandable why these people gave in as cults deal with the existential questions we all have and tend to be charismatic herders who draw in their sheep by promising them salvation/rebirth. It seems any "religion" that asks you to give up your family and belongings will most certainly be one that wants your entire devotion to manipulate you and ensure your dependence on the cult and its leader.

  3. These cult names don't sound bad at all, but I can picture the horrifying events that have occurred because of them. I would like to know more detail about these cults maybe through someone who has first hand experience with one of them to understand more.

  4. It is incredible how the sense of belonging and brotherhood can reach such an extreme (and disturbing) countenance. This is not only a religious factor, this kind of event can be also compared to the Nazism and very well portrayed on the movie "The Wave" (Die Welle).

  5. This was extremely shocking to watch. I can't believe how many people were a part of these groups. It's hard to imagine so many people being susceptible to these ideologies. I also don't understand why the cult leaders killed and abused their members. I didn't know very much about cults, and I still don't understand where the leaders got these beliefs. I am also surprised that they were able to recruit so many people.

  6. Great video but most definitely shocking! I was not aware of the amount of cults that exists in our country. The level of manipulation of the leaders in conjunction with the followers need for belonging and maybe even excessive fanaticism can only lead to negative outcomes.

  7. Originally when I heard of these cults or cults in general, I didn't think much of it. I would just be uneased that they were very extremists of their religions, therefore they would do rituals more intensely. The scariest part of this video for me was when Jim Jones was being spoken about. He treated many as slaves, stripping them about everything they had, made them do intense labor, and enforced them to listen to him. He was the leader of a very powerful group and was even associated with the Ku Klux Klan. It is bizarre that just a single man can create a world of fear.

The word “Cult” in itself sounds scary. I heard of the tragedy of Jonestown years ago from a friend and looked it up on youtube. The results were dreadful and it’s hard to believe that something so tragic happened just so recently. Although, I had never heard of the Heaven’s gate tragedy and although still minimal in comparison to Jonestown, the mere fact that individuals committed suicide by choice, thinking that there was something better on the “other side” is crazy to me. Individuals that have the power and skill to manipulate a multitude of people to kill others or even themselves are by far scarier than anything else.

  9. The word cult has a very negative connotation and rightfully so. While watching this video, I realized how extreme their beliefs are. I stand for the idea that everyone has the right to believe in what they would like even though I might not exactly agree with there beliefs. That being said, there is a difference for me to understand that one might not believe in God like I do, but I can't understand why some beliefs would be so dangerous and extreme. There was one guy that was mentioned in the video that basically treated people so poorly that he would take everything that they owned away from them. That's an idea that I don't understand.

  10. A cult becomes dangerous when it can control people and manipulate followers via blackmailing, especially when this blackmailing involves the lives of innocent people. But yeah it is important to note that not all cults are bad, it is just that there are a few terribly evil ones.

  11. It's an abomination of how cults exploit people, sometimes aiming for their desire for something to believe in (perhaps for purpose) and others for their need for belonging. Sometimes, once inside, our biases for group mentality and authority may blind us to what an outsider may consider obvious.

  12. Cults are never good so I would never be involved in one.

  13. This video was scarier than I thought! I find interesting how the leaders of the cults have something in common, and that is that they have some sort of mental problem or something to do with drugs. I guess these people didn't know what they were getting their selves into because they were manipulated. It is very sad and scary to think about how these dangerous people can affect so many people's lives including the children.
