Nicaraguan pastor jailed for burning woman to death in 'exorcism'

An evangelical Nicaraguan pastor and four followers have been sentenced to 30 years for burning a woman to death in a so-called exorcism ritual.
Vilma Trujillo, 25, died in February after being tied up and thrown on a fire.
The group had denied killing her and said she was possessed by the devil.
"The suffering that Trujillo was subjected to is something no human being should go through," said judge Alfredo Silva.
Pastor Juan Rocha, 23, plus his siblings Tomasa and Pedro Rocha, and Franklin Jarquin and Esneyda Orozco, were convicted of murder.

  8. This tragedy could have been prevented if there wasn't an abuse of power from the pastor's side. This news was so unfortunate to hear.

  11. I actually know a friend of mine from the American Red Cross, Pastor Andrew Morris Thompson, who once told me he had to perform an exorcism. Yet, as a professional, I don't think he would ever take it this far to incorporate burning. I think this is an example of religious malpractice.

  14. I'm sick of hearing news like this. A man murders a woman and blames it on "religious rituals", a mass murder kills dozens and blames it on "mental insanity", etc. You can't just kill/hurt someone and try to cover it up with excuses that will potentially get you out of trouble. One of these days, people will learn to take responsibility for their actions...
