In which John Green teaches you about the Protestant Reformation. Prior to the Protestant Reformation, pretty much everyone in Europe was a Roman Catholic. Not to get all great man, but Martin Luther changed all that. Martin Luther didn't like the corruption he saw in the church, especially the sale of indulgences, so he left the church and started his own. And it caught on! And it really did kind of change the world. The changes increased literacy and education, and some even say the Protestant Reformation was the beginning of Capitalism in Europe.

DeleteThe Protestant Reformation's legacy had profound effects for most of Europe. It played a key role in determining alliances for the 30 years war against the Hapsburg bid for hegemony and consolidation of power by the Holy Roman Empire. But it also has caused divide in Europe, such as The Troubles in Northern Ireland. Still, it is proof that Christian leaders will go through great trials to reform and that vicarious redemption is the only path to salvation, not the Church.
ReplyDeleteJohn Green is always able to concisely explain a certain topic all while making it wholly charming. Great video!
