Plato’s Allegory of the Cave - Alex Gendler

Published on Mar 17, 2015 View full lesson: http://ed.ted.com/lessons/plato-s-all... Twenty four hundred years ago, Plato, one of history’s most famous thinkers, said life is like being chained up in a cave forced to watch shadows flitting across a stone wall. Beyond sounding quite morbid, what exactly did he mean? Alex Gendler unravels Plato's Allegory of the Cave, found in Book VII of "The Republic." 1. philosophy hurts my brain. People only see what others allow them to see, so maybe nothing is as it seems...

  2. This video is very interesting. I have heard about Plato in my honors class where we are reacting the past. I'm a moderate democrat in the game, and one of my friends is Plato. It is so much fun.

  3. Fluer, pop an aspirin and try an ice pack on top of your head, it should reduce the swelling! lol (just kidding)

Romaissa, I liked the fact that this animation communicates the basic idea of Plato's analogy of the cave in simple terms.

  4. I think what Plato meant is that you can only see what people want you to see. He's saying that the people around you shaped your opinions and views. You're only seeing what your parents and teachers teach you. You're not actually seeing what really there. And just like caves on a wall, whats really there could just simply be an illusion of life. i remember learning about this in my English class in 9th grade. This was really interesting.

  5. Plato had great point regarding what reality is. He believes most of us do not really see things the way they might be. We see them the way we were taught to see them. So the concept of reality can differ a lot between different religions.

  7. When the narrator says that Plato described life like living in a cave with your back turned towards the entrance/exit, I think he meant that people define reality by what they have known all their lives. So, when they are exposed to something outside that realm, they might reject it or take time to adapt to the "new reality."

  8. This is a very cute video. I liked how it is able to explain Plato's thoughts and the idea that we see only what we want to see.

  9. I think it's very interesting way of explaining how subjective reality really is. Plato's allegory really does make one reflect on how sure we can be about what we know, or "think" we know.

  10. This was a very interesting video. At times people are so comfortable and use to what they know that when they encounter something that is unknown to them they reject it.

  13. I love the way Plato explains this story because it's so relatable to our society. So many people believe just what they see rather than searching things up themselves. Once someone makes something a big deal to us, that's when we desire to actually seek more information.

  15. This video was interesting to watch. People believe in what others tell them than rather discover things on their own. When a new idea is exposed they tend to reject it because they themselves do not understand it. This is relatable to our society today.

  19. Philosophy sometimes isn't found as an interesting topic to some people, so the way this video is put together along with the entertaining animation makes the topic of Plato overall interesting.

  20. This video was engrossing, it encouraged me to avoid conformity by searching for reality above basic assumptions.

  21. This animation was really helpful, I had not learned much about this specific story but had heard of it. As unfortunate as it is today, this is directly applicable to our society. We have basically assigned expectations and certain perceptions to certain words; ie beauty and feminity in young women.

  23. I strongly agree with this video and its message, we see things how we are supposed to see them and how society wants us to, but not everyone and everything it to be seen the same, since we are all different and this video made the topic of plato a lot more interesting and entertaining while still being very informative.
