Crash Course on Suffering and Evil

The Problem of Evil: Crash Course Philosophy #13
Published on May 9, 2016
After weeks of exploring the existence of nature of god, today Hank explores one of the biggest problems in theism, and possibly the biggest philosophical question humanity faces: why is there evil?

  1. I found this video very interesting- mainly because I am a person of many questions. The many forms of evil causes many problems- but overall all religions try to solve the existence of evil- theodicy. In my opinion, evil can't be avoided.

  2. To be frank, this video made me a bit more curious as to what the truth is. I agreed mostly with the theory that we must understand pain in order to experience pleasure. The free will theodicy also helps explain some proof of a good. Overall the question still looms.

  3. This was a very interesting video. I constantly ask myself these questions and wonder, if God is good then why would He allow the presence of evil? Religions often intend to decipher the real reason and answer these questions. Personally, I believe that the origin of evil comes from the free will that God gave human beings. Since we were given the freedom to act without the constraint of fate, sometimes human beings act in an immoral and sinful way.

  4. To be honest, this video opened my eyes to the countless questions that humans ask about the problem of evil. I think that evil has to be present, simply because good is present. It is like a yin and yang, one is nothing without the other. Where one can be good, another may be evil. Overall, I enjoyed the video, it went over the problem of evil in a simple yet effective way.

  5. This video asks questions every individual, and generally every religion, struggles to figure out and attempts to answer the origins of evil as well as why it exists. I believe the existence of "evil" is inevitable the same as the existence of good is ambiguous. What is considered evil and good is decided upon by societal "norms" and the idea that morality may stem from religion is an interesting idea and perhaps even true. Every individual will suffer in life, whereas, not every individual may practice good especially in the time of suffering. Suffering may either taint someone's perspective on life resulting in bitterness meanwhile, another individual may learn to forgive and move on from that pain. It is in these moments of suffering as our reaction to pain assists in developing our character.

  6. This reminds me of a discussion I had with a friend pertaining to the existence of a God. We went through all of these and neither of us could change each other's mind on whether God exists or not. I do find that natural evil contradicts the soul making theory pretty well, but maybe we aren't supposed to have the answer?

  7. This was an exceptionally intriguing video. I continually put forth these inquiries and ponder, if God is great then why might He permit the nearness of abhorrence? Religions regularly mean to translate the genuine reason and answer these inquiries. By and by, I trust that the beginning of wickedness originates from the unrestrained choice that God gave people. Since we were given the opportunity to act without the requirement of destiny, once in a while individuals act in an unethical and wicked ways

  9. I find this video very interesting. Hank points out that you cannot have love with hate, light without darkness, and good without evil. You will never know evil if you have not experienced the goodness in the world. Many people believe that evil things happen to them because they were bad in the past. Personally I believe that you get challenged with these evils because we have the strength to overcome it.

  10. This video sheds some light on a very ambiguous topic. I believe its true that in nature there is no good or evil, simply survival. Morality and a sense of right and wrong seem to be unique to humans, and are also highly dependent on the individual's ideals and beliefs. Al Capone, among many infamous characters in history, held a sincere belief that they had done nothing wrong regarding certain crimes, as their minds had found ways to rationalize the actions (i.e. stealing from a bank which stole from many in 'unjust' fees). What may be seen as a good act to one person may be evil to others. A murderer may have been wronged and thought the victim deserved it. A thief may steal from a family to feed their own. Perhaps a man had a mental condition which drove him to commit atrocities. Who do you blame in these circumstances? Do you blame the person who commits it? Or do you blame the circumstances, experiences, and subsequently formed beliefs that have driven one to commit the act of evil?

  11. I thought this video was very interesting. It showed me some different ideas of theodicy and arguments that people have about evil. I do believe that good and evil cannot exist without one another. Each person also determines what they think is good or evil. We are able to make our own decisions. We cannot always blame everything on God, because evil might even be out of his control.

  12. This was the chapter that my group had to present and I learned so much about suffering and evil. The video mentions the different kinds of questions society tends to ask about evil. For example, if there is a God then why would he allow evil to occur or even why can't he stop evil from occurring. I ask this question all the time. What I have learned from this chapter is that there is a book that was created that tries to explain evil by saying a story. Another important lesson that I learned is that the stronger the faith one has towards God, the less one tends to question the idea that God is supposed to take away all the bad in the world. Rather one should have faith that God does everything for a reason even if one may not understand what he is planning to do with the evil that happens.

  14. this video does a very good job and introducing major topics discussed in this chapter. I realized that good can’t exist without evil because who is to determine that an act is good or evil? there needs to be a set two to be able to compare the two. This relate back to what Hank was saying where you can’t have light without darkness and so on. I believe that God only gives you what you can handle.

  15. Growing up, I've always wondered why there's evil in the world and why God would allow good people to suffer. However, being a Catholic, I was taught that God didn't place evil on this earth. Instead, we did (Adam and Eve). In my heart, I don't think that God allows evil to happen. I feel that nature runs its course and God tries to help us out the best he can. Besides, if there were no evil in this world, how would we know what's good? I also think that when others suffer from terminal diseases let's say, we learn to appreciate our health more. In a way, evil gives ourselves a reason to live while not complaining about the petty things that life throws at us every now and then. Life really is beautiful-- the good, the bad, and the in-between too! God gave us the gift of life, so he can't be all that bad right?

  16. This video was very interesting to me, specifically because I am always asking myself these questions. I was born into a religious family but that doesn't stop me from asking about why there is still evil if everything about God is supposed to be good. The reason why I think that there is evil, is because there is also good and everything in life has a balance of the positive and the negative. This video caught my attention because it made me think about all the possibilities why there is actually evil out there.

  17. This is a very controversial topic. I've had countless arguments/discussions about this issue with my friends and my family. I do believe and think that evil exists, simply because good is present. It is kind of scary to think about it but I am very open minded person, so it is something that sparks my interest and I have no problem discussing it. Overall, I enjoyed the video and they were approaching the topic of God and evil. They went over the problem of evil in a very simple and effective way.

  18. I found this video to be very informative. I myself have asked this exact question and wasn't entirely sure how to even begin to formulate an answer. In my opinion, I feel that there is no theodicy that can fully answer the question. We are told that we are made in God's image. However, we are not perfect and have faults. Does this mean that God may have some flaws of his own?

  19. I feel that this topic goes hand and hand with that of ethics and morals, how you view what is right, wrong, and what is labeled as suffering. I think its open to interpretation. From a religious standpoint maybe the evil is used to test your faith and to reward one for not giving in to such temptations (looking from a christian view point that is)

  21. This was a great video. It showed the opinions of several religions and their viewpoints one evil and God. It helped me learn a lot while also making me laugh by relating it to things like CP30 from Star Wars.

  22. Human beings must be genuinely free to respond to God in whichever way they choose. Therefore, It is essential for the human beings to have a genuine free will. The necessary consequences of a world with free will, is that it will include the existence of both good and evil. In order for this free will to be genuine, God must not place limits on it, or intervene arbitrarily. If God was to intervene every time that someone was about to do something genuinely evil, then this would tie our hands and restrict our freedom.

  23. This video was great especially if you are still trying to grasp the modern idea of what heaven and hell or evil and good is in the world. The perception of hell and heaven can of course be different things, but the video creates a vivid and most common description of both.

  24. Learning about evil and suffering of different religions is always interesting to me. Some of the things they do to people I could never imagine doing them.

  25. Evil is something that exists in humanity is not going to disappear. In fact, all of us either theists or atheist have goodness and evil in ourselves, because that is our nature, but we can decide which one is more important, which one is correct, and which one benefit us and the rest of the world.
Many people question the existence of an omnipotent God because of the fact that there is evil between us, but what many people do not know is that when God created us, he gave us the free will, which is the right that we have to choose who and what we want to be.

  26. Evil and understanding of suffering is definitely interpreted in different ways through diverse religions. I find it extremely interesting how these beliefs are portrayed.

  27. It has always been of interest to human kind to ask questions that veer on the topic of religion or faith. The video talked about people asking about the existence of god. It compared how evil was viewed as well as atheists and theists. He said that the basic difference between atheists and theists is the rationale of how evil existed. Both groups believe that people have good and bad inside of them. Evil brings into question the existence of an omnipotent god because what all powerful being cannot control or eradicate evil.

  28. I, personally, think that there exists the right amount of evil proportionate to the right amount to goodness in the world. They exist whether you believe in a God or don't, so you might as well choose some theory to support and endure the toughness of life.

  29. This video had me questioning the good and evil things in life and the balance, if we have one, in this world. This helped me understand the perspective of Christians with their belief of Heaven and Hell and about Suffering.

  30. I think that if the good exists then the evil has to exist too, the way every person makes the actions is what makes us believe on good and bad. some people believe on god, and people also believe that if you do wrong, then the evil will take.

  31. I believe that the good and evil are like two sides of the coin, but good saves souls and evil destroys good souls.
