This is a great series by Prof. Stephen Prothero about 8 world religions, in which he approaches an analysis of each religion from the point of view of the human problem ... in other words, what is the problem that Buddhism is trying to answer? Basically, how to deal with suffering.
Prothero -- God is not one (these are the Youtube videos: approximately 20 to 25 minutes each)
Here is the information about his book:
I've heard about the author. Prothero teaches at Boston University. This book must be good!

Really good book. i don not share the point of view in which the 8 religions are presented as rivals though I am a believer they all have contributed to the big question where did all come from?

I watched the section of Islam in which the author states that the human problem is pride and self-reliance which can be remedied by the submission to God. The Five Pillars of Islam which include praying five times a day is just one way that Muslims demonstrate their devotion to God. I also enjoyed the section about how Sunnis and Shias view submission to God. I think one example that separates Shias from Sunnis is the institution of the Velayat-e-faqih (Guardianship of the Islamic jurist) in Iran
ReplyDeleteI really like this authors notion of every religion is in short trying to address a human problem. For Islam that is pride for other religions it could be something completely different. Awesome!
ReplyDeleteSuper cool, will try to check this out next!
